Context
As a Jr UX/UI Designer at Yes We Are Mad, I was tasked with redesigning Tigo Money, Millicom’s primary P2P payment platform, and launching Bitcoin payments for several Latin American countries. The goal was to elevate a carrier-led utility into a competitive fintech ecosystem capable of launching Bitcoin payments in Ecuador and El Salvador during the high-volatility market of 2021.
The Problem
Launching Bitcoin when it was still a "young" asset meant designing for high user anxiety. We had to ensure users understood the value of their holdings while navigating technical constraints like dated mobile hardware common in Latin American markets, which made heavy motion design a performance risk.
My Contribution
Owned the "Inicio" (Home) Hub: I redesigned the central dashboard to display Bitcoin balances alongside local currency, ensuring the system converted values in real-time to provide Frictionless Certainty.
Volatility Education: To address the "friction point" of paying with a volatile asset, I strategically placed informational text throughout the payment flow to clarify conversion rates at the moment of the transaction.
P2P QR Integration: I introduced QR code functionality for peer-to-peer connections, bringing the app up to par with global competitors and simplifying in-person money transfers.
Onboarding Optimization: I redesigned the card input flows to streamline how users funded their wallets, focusing on reducing "drop-off" during the initial setup.
Process and Workflow Innovations
The Figma Migration: While the agency primarily used Sketch, I successfully advocated for and personally led the migration of the Tigo Money designs into Figma.
Real-World Testing: I used Figma to test on mobile devices, ensuring that our "Inicio" and payment flows were accessible and legible on the hardware our customers use.
Impact
Successful 2021 Launch:
Delivered one of the first major Bitcoin-integrated mobile wallets in the Latin American region.
Improved Usability:
The total redesign made it significantly easier for users to pay bills and send money by adopting modern P2P standards like QR codes.
Operational Velocity:
Migrating the project to Figma improved collaboration between the creative director, PM, and international clients.
